PROJECT CHELONIAN

Chelonian, a Green Life project organized by our fellow interactors, has turned out to be a tremendous success with it acquiring the “Most outstanding Green Life project: 2nd runner’s up” award within the Interact District 3220 for the years 23/24. The sublime aim of Project Chelonian was protecting and conserving sea turtles while propagating awareness among communities concerning these invaluable marine creatures.

After accumulating information from the Sea Turtle Conservation Station at Dehiwala Mount-Lavinia on the 15th of December 2023, the team strove in order to achieve its discerned aspirations of: planning and overseeing the secure release of turtle hatchlings into the ocean; safeguarding and maintaining essential sea turtle nesting sites; providing local communities a voice in conservation initiatives with the opportunity to participate actively in the process. This project furnished the team with the opportunity to visit various hatcheries in Sri Lanka including those in Hikkaduwa, Borella and Dehiwala.

Finally, after about two months’ worth of relentless efforts and dedication by our team members towards fulfilling this project’s purpose, the award was presented as an endowment.

Here is a remark left by our former president, Int. Piyathma De Zoysa with regard to the project:

“A huge thanks goes out to the executive committee, committee members, the avenue directress and the volunteers of the day for making this project a memorable and informative initiative and finally I can see the hard work of all of them paid off.”
